![]() ![]() My listen now tab is also pretty much always on point, and my radio kills it. ![]() Obscure personal bangers, that I had never listened to on Apple Music, but that I had on heavy rotation on Spotify upwards of 5 years prior, would pop up on it and I would just be in awe that it knew to pick those particular songs. As soon as started with apple, I immediately ported all those playlists over, loved the playlists and the songs on all of them (via MacBook), and loved all of my top 20 or so albums, and ever since then I have always found it eerie how good the favorites mix especially was. When I first switched to Apple Music a few years back, I had a spent a lot of time curating my own Spotify playlists, and they were an extensive, and pretty complete representation of my music taste. I’m not sure if I’m just lucky or if it’s something I did, but my personal mixes have pretty much been absolute fire from day one, with the exception of the new music mix, which only recently became listenable. It’s just not up to the standards I’d expect from Apple. But I wish the first party Apple offering were better because as it stands, it just doesn’t cut it. There are a number of third party apps that ‘get it’ in a way that Apple doesn’t, like Cs: Music Player and Marvis. Apple is my favorite product company and I’m also a big music aficionado, so it pains me to see that the company that invented the iPod, iTunes, and redefined the entire music industry - is in such rough shape when it comes to music. I know that criticizing Apple Music has become a popular pastime these days, but this is not some anti-Apple post or bandwagon criticism. Star Ratings next to each line item, rather than having stars buried in the menu systemĪ quick toggle between 256/Lossless/Atmos. Apple Music needs something similar.Ī ‘Pinned Favorites’ section in the Library tab So many other first party Apple apps have introduced tag/filter systems, like Reminders, Notes, and Apple Maps. The app needs Smart Playlists/filters as well as tags. For example, the minimized ‘Now Playing’ bar should be rounded and less thin, like the iOS 15 Safari URL bar. Much of the app is too thin and flat, like it’s still stuck in the iOS 7 design ethos, even though much of iOS has evolved a fair bit since then. It’s odd how Wikipedia handles album organization better than Apple Music does. Everything else should be in separate sections. The main discog should be original releases organized by release date. Remasters/Deluxe version should never be in the main discography. More gestures needed, like two-finger drag to select multiple items (just like in Mail & Reminders) and pinch-to-zoom to resize and change information density (like in Photos).Īrtist discographies need better organization. Playlist management needs to be improved, with better folder functionality, more views, and better use of space. Lyrics/Now Playing/Up Next tabs) and swipe upward to get an Apple Music overview with key functionality. You’d swipe horizontally between tabs (ie. That could really improve navigation and control. I’d like to see Apple Music adopt the ‘pillbox’ gesture system from the iPhone X and now from Safari in iOS 15. Visually it’s fine, but navigating feels like a chore - everything from jumping in and out of ‘Lyrics’ to tapping a name and hitting ‘Go To’ - feels cumbersome and unintuitive. The ‘Now Playing’ screen needs a redesign. The app is both extremely slow and has memory issues, causing frequent refreshes. This creates all sorts of problems with metadata, analytics, and even Siri requests. Matching algorithms are still terrible, frequently causing albums to be broken up because half is matched to one version on the Apple database and half to another version. Now in 2021, I really want to like this app, but it has so many problems, of both a design nature and a technical nature. ![]() Some of these flaws have been resolved, many haven’t, and some new ones have been introduced. In those 6 years, I’ve written extensively on Apple Music’s many flaws - both big and small. In the 6+ years since Apple Music was released in June of 2015, it has been a controversial app, to put it mildly. ![]()
